Week3B: Aesthetics, Design & Branding Pt. 2.

Two websites that I visit frequently:
These sites are effective for me because they both produce content that I am interested in. While Instagram is user generated content that I can follow people who post things that I am interested, Hubspot is a blog focusing on marketing and sales tips/techniques mainly for social media. I learn a lot from Hubspot about marketing via social media

Instagram's layout is a great example of ease of use in design. With their very simple photo editing and uploading process, almost anyone can use Instagram. There aren't many feature either making it simple to interact with other users and share content to other social media sites as well.

Hubspot's site includes depth of content. In a few short paragraphs on a blog post, they are able to teach you useful tools for optimizing your marketing through social media.

I visit both of these sites daily because not only do they provide content that I am interested in but I am also looking to be inspired daily from the posts and it's just become part of my daily routine. I believe for a site or brand to impact someone's daily life in that way must really have a grasp on their design, making it aesthetically pleasing and share worthy.

My only thoughts on what can be improved for Instagram are the constant ads that are now popping up on my feed that may be incorrectly targeted towards me. Otherwise, anything I might find "annoying" about Instagram is simply solvable thanks to the unfollow button.

Week3A: Aesthetics, Design & Branding Pt. 1.

As I had mentioned in my first blog post, aesthetic is everything to me. So I'm excited to review the websites of 4 companies and decide what they're doing wrong, what they're doing right, and how aesthetic impacts a readers reaction upon visiting a site.

I will review:

The Unaesthetic

Putting in the effort to make a beautiful, seamless website can be tedious but the result will be oh so rewarding. If your site is overloaded with images, the viewer might exit the page faster than you can say aesthetic.

A few problems I found were;
  • The site's background is covered with bulky images of unappealing junk-yard cars.
  • The font and mismatched colors make it hard for the reader to follow.
  • The site is not well organized.
My suggestions to better improve this site would be to remove all of the unnecessary background images, this will help the user better to focus on your actual topic/products. I would stick to a similar font color palate when creating a site page. It's simply unappealing to mix three different colors in one small paragraph. And lastly, to further improve this site I would organize the site by product and information. Adding tabs for photos, contact information, product, and service.

It's best to simplify when creating a site, people have short attention spans and you wont grab their attention by over-crowding them with information and images. Less is more.

This site is an example of being too simple. I know that sounds like a contradiction to what I said above about "less is more" while that is mostly true, you still need to entice the user with a clean layout and throw in a few images to keep the user interested.

What I found to be unappealing;
  • The site is extremely dated.
  • Unorganized
  • Font and photo size
How I would remedy this is to add a clean homepage featuring their most popular products with an "about us" section and a drop down menu with options for each category of the products they sell, such as "New Products," "Welding Torches," and "Accessories." I would also not use such a small font, and add a few more images.

The Aesthetically Pleasing

Apple

Apple's site is the perfect mix of simplicity and enticement. It is both beautiful and functional.

At the top of the home page is a slide show of their newest product and update announcements. They have laid out a menu of all of their products to be easily found, and each of their product pages are extremely detailed from the imagery, to the features. You know exactly what you're getting with Apple and a user can get excited about purchasing a product without even seeing the product in person first.

Ford

Similar to Apple, Ford gets you excited about your purchase before you even see it in person. They use plenty of detailed images on their product pages, my favorite feature on the Ford site is their "Build & Price" option. It gives you the same in-person experience without the hassle. They also have a find a dealer tab making it a no brainer to find one closest to you.

Aesthetic Impact

First impressions are extremely important, so as a brand trying to grab your customer- you need to attract them with the beauty of your site. As I mentioned above, people have short attention spans and are quick to make judgments off of what they see right off the bat. It can be challenging to really know what your users want to see, it takes a knowledge of marketing and an eye for detail. The things that will effect your site are layout, imagery, colors, and how easily they can navigate the page.

The internet can at times get frustrating, if a link doesn't work or if something is difficult to find, it will turn a user off of your site and force them to look elsewhere.

Simply put, the judgement of a website comes down to visuals and if the visuals are confusing or difficult for a user to focus on the information/product you're providing- you will lose that business.

Week2B: Communication - Business & Consumer PT.2

Continuing on the topic of communication between business and the consumer, I have compiled a small list of some of my favorite companies using social media to their advantage...

1.JetBlue AirWays - http://www.jetblue.com/

Social Media: TwitterFacebookInstagramYoutube.

The last post from JetBlue on twitter was 9/18/16, their last Facebook post was 9/19/16, last Instagram post was 9/19/16, and they have yet to post to Youtube.

In my opinion, JetBlue is a great example of a brand using social media for marketing and communication. JetBlue is committed to providing top-notch customer support, questions and concerns are answered promptly, and their accounts are up-to-date with JetBlue not being afraid to throw in a few memes and funny tweets in between to keep the users engaged.

JetBlue's Facebook account is aimed more at promoting sales, giveaways and content that gets you excited to visit one of the many locations that JetBlue flies to.

While twitter is for fast communication like I had mentioned above, if you have a problem tweet them for a response much faster than the email reply you might expect.

Their Instagram account is updated daily with enticing photos of food, and post-card worthy snaps of their customers travels from around the world.
They haven't uploaded any videos to Youtube yet, but if I worked for their social media team I would try to work on videos demonstrating JetBlue's easy travel experience from ticket purchase, boarding, to arrival. With some travel inspiring videos of any of their amazing destinations as well.

2. Netflix - http://www.netflix.com

Social Media: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube

Netflix posts daily, in fact their last tweet was only 4 hours ago. Netflix really understands their social audience. Throwing in a few memes with the ever-popular "Netflix and chill" phrase. They continue to create content that resonates with users.
Netflix even posted live updates from the Emmy's via Instagram with cameos from the stars of their hit series "Stranger Things." Which they received quite a bit of positive feedback from.

3. Charminhttp://www.charmin.com/en-us

Social Media: Facebook, Twitter, Youtube.

While you may be thinking, "Why would I follow a t.p. company on social media?" The toilet paper company came up with a brilliant way to combat a mundane product with its #TweetFromTheSeat campaign, which asked users to send tweets whenever they were … well, you know.

Charmin's Facebook account is the place to go if you want coupons, photos of their adorable bear mascot, and coupons for all your t.p. needs. They also reply to witty comments, which can be fun to see.

I believe they have done well for connect with customers on social media with these tactics because for the most part, it's pretty silly. And they know if you're on the toilet, you're more than likely on your phone browsing Twitter/Facebook.

4. Dove - http://www.dove.com/

Social Media: FacebookTwitterInstagramYoutube.

Stated in Dove's twitter bio, "Dove is committed to helping women realize their beauty potential by creating products that deliver real care." They have such a beautiful goal when it comes to using social media, creating amazing content aimed to empower woman and make them feel good about themselves.

They post daily on all platforms and have their body positive ads running on Youtube.

Ranking in at 26.5k likes on Facebook, Dove posts more positive videos like the #MyBeautyMySay campaign featuring "sexist comments made about female athlete" It's nice to see such positivity from a company and using social media to promote that.

5. Starbucks - http://www.starbucks.com/

Social Media: TwitterFacebookInstagramYoutubePinterest.

The coffee mogul is killing the world of social media. Posting daily on Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest inviting fans to share photos and stories.

With Fall finally here, they're marketing for the "Pumpkin Spice Latte" is back and stronger than ever.

Starbucks is currently using Instagram and Twitter to urge their millennial fans to vote. Which I think is absolutely great.

They really focus on aesthetic content, and good customer interaction. Whether you hate Starbucks or love them, you can admit that they are on top of social media trends.

Week2A: Communication - Business & Consumer Pt.1

I have unfortunately had difficulty communicating with a business in the past. I will explain what made my experience a negative one.

About 2 years ago, I was invited to attend a weekend-long event for thoroughbred horse racing up in Los Angeles at the world famous Santa Anita Racetrack. I needed to purchase a few dresses for the event, and in my search of affordable, and fashionable clothing, I found BooHoo. Boohoo is a UK based clothing brand offering the newest trends at half the price. Who doesn't like that?

I scoured the site till I found exactly what I needed, expedited my shipping, and proceeded to check out. Once I was finished I received my confirmation email and a tracking number. I was told I could expect my package in 7 business days. I patiently waited, checking my shipping updates every day (don't act like you don't do it too.) 7 days go by and still nothing showed up and the shipping updates hadn't been updated since 3 days prior, saying my package was held in customs.

I contacted BooHoo's customer service via email and didn't hear back for a couple days. Finally, someone did get back to me after I emailed a few more times. The response I got back was that yes, indeed my items were stuck in customs due to unknown reasons and it was out of their control.

As you can imagine, I was furious.. Spending over $100, paying for faster shipping, all to have the brand tell me that I'm out of luck. I reached our to them via Twitter, hoping to get someone a bit more helpful, a few moments later I got a message saying that they would be able to process a refund for me since the package was not going to be delivered as promised. Thankfully I received my refund a few days later but I was so upset about the whole experience, and I'll never shop there again.

Social media has made getting in contact with a business much faster, and easier. I am always able to get someone from a brand's social media team to respond and help me out. I also appreciate when a brand responds to positive comments or replies to something that they are tagged in, praising the product. That definitely makes me feel like they appreciate their customers and fans.

If I had my own business, and I was receiving comments, whether the topic is positive or negative- I would try to respond to all of the comments, addressing either the issue or thanking the customer for using my product or service!

Week1B: Business & Personal Use of Social Media

I believe most social media is compatible for both business and personal use, name one brand that doesn't promote themselves on multiple platforms. Social Media has changed the way we as consumers learn and connect with brands across the world.

In my opinion, Facebook is geared mainly towards personal use.

Facebook was originally designed for college student to connect with peers, it is now used to share your everyday life with family and friends. A look at someone's profile is like looking into a polished version of their lives. Facebook for business is also a useful tool and an excellent way for brands and companies to connect with their "fans" that like their page. It's definitely a double edged sword but Facebook is aimed for personal use.

Instagram is becoming huge for businesses and brands to use as a marketing tool.
There's so many different things you can share- your product, sales, storefront, events and daily activities. Instagram now has a "contact" button added directly to the profile for easy access.

I can say that 80% of the accounts that I follow on Instagram are brands that I am obsessing over. Companies can take advantage of users with a high following to promote their name for them, sometimes for free. Free marketing? Who wouldn't take advantage of that. I have a decent following on Instagram and I have previously worked with a few companies to promote their product, sometimes the promotion is for profit, but often the process is just an exchange for more followers and sampling their product. I believe Instagram will continue to be a successful marketing tool for businesses.

Week1A: My Template

This is my first time blogging so I am excited to jump right in and learn more!

I chose the simple template to start. I am all about aesthetics! I prefer simplicity. Instead of using Blogger.com's preset orange colors, I changed my background color to a pale pink, It's my favorite color and I think it reflects my personality well. I wanted my URL to be my name- It's recognizable and constant on all of my social media profiles. Consistency makes it easier for clients and followers to find your brand across all platforms.

I will be doing some tweaking to my blog, once I get a feel for the tools and settings.

I'm looking forward to building this blog and interacting with my fellow classmates.
